Dolen Village in Bulgaria seems frozen in time. Unlike nearby villages Kovachevitsa and Leshten, this hidden gem hasn’t been transformed by tourism or concrete developments. Many houses are empty and crumbling, while the narrow streets are overgrown in places. There’s not a single paved road, no commercial cafés or restaurants — and that’s precisely the point. This is a place you visit to step out of everyday life and into an authentic historical atmosphere.

Don’t miss these highlights in Dolen village

If you are planning a visit, here are the top experiences you should not miss:

Stone-roofed houses – Explore the unique 19th-century architecture that makes Dolen village a protected national reserve.

The Church of St. Nicholas – This spiritual site is famous for its stunning murals and a unique bell cast seven times.

Endless mountain views – The village offers perfect spots for photography lovers and nature seekers.

Authentic flavors – Discover traditional Rhodopean dishes in the cozy family guest houses nearby.

How to Get to Dolen Village in the Rhodope Mountains

Traveling to Dolen village is a scenic experience. If you’re setting off from Sofia, follow the main road south toward Blagoevgrad, then take the route toward Gotse Delchev. As you wind into the Western Rhodope Mountains, you’ll find a turn north that leads directly to the village. The old part of Dolen sits above its modern section. Although the final stretch is steep and narrow, the panoramic views make every bend worth it.

I’ve also filmed a short video of Dolen village during my visit. Subtitles are included, so you can follow along easily. Take a look if you’re curious!

Currently, a few guesthouses host travelers, but most of the time they sit quietly empty. Outside those walls, everything feels incredibly real. Modernity and human fuss stay at a distance here. While some owners have restored their houses as holiday homes, they rarely visit. Consequently, the village keeps its solitude, framed by the untamed beauty of the Rhodope slopes.

The Two Faces of Dolen: Ancient and Modern

Dolen is part of Satovcha Municipality in the Western Rhodopes. The drive there invites constant stops for photos of breathtaking panoramas. Furthermore, the new village sits lower on the mountain with modern comforts. However, most visitors head for the old village above, where stone cottages cling to the hillsides and narrow paths rise steeply between them.

Old streets of Dolen village, Western Rhodopes

The road twists toward the village square, where local elders sit outside their homes. Conversation comes easily here, and residents often talk about Dolen’s vibrant past. For instance, the school once overflowed with children. Today, only about 30 year-round residents remain, mostly retirees who watch visitors with gentle interest.

The Stone Houses of Dolen Village

This lost corner of the Western Rhodopes has miraculously preserved its appearance from over 200 years ago. Built entirely of stone and wood, these houses exude dignity. Not surprisingly, Bulgarian filmmakers have used Dolen village as a set for several famous movies.

The first thing that catches your eye are the stone-slate roofs. Laid like overlapping scales, they seem to cradle the house itself. Moreover, the chimneys are equally fascinating — some are round like cardinal hats, while others are square like regal crowns. Traditionally, the lower floor housed livestock to heat the upper rooms, where families slept on thick rugs.

Historical Secrets of Dolen village

The history of Dolen village is rich and ancient. About 60 years after Bulgaria fell under Ottoman rule, several Christian families sought refuge here. At its peak, the village counted more than 2,500 inhabitants. Furthermore, excavations have uncovered remains of Thracian necropolises and a Roman bridge nearby.

How the People of Dolen Built Their Church

The creation of the local church was born of ingenuity. To get permission from the Ottoman authorities, a local leader named Grandpa Kosta buried an icon of St. Nicholas in a meadow. He claimed to have seen it in a dream. When the icon was “discovered,” permission was granted. The St. Nicholas Church was completed in 1837, and its bells can be heard up to 8 km away.

Unique Singing Traditions and the Amphitheater

Local grandmothers are famed for their traditional high singing, a style recognized by UNESCO. Additionally, Dolen village features an impressive amphitheatre. It was built to host an ethno-fusion jazz festival that drew musicians from around the world. Today, it stands as a symbol of the village’s effort to support sustainable tourism.

Open-air amphitheater in Dolen village, Rhodopes

Why Dolen remains a Hidden Gem

Many travellers describe Dolen as a hidden treasure because it remains untouched by mass tourism. By preserving its original architecture and atmosphere, the village offers a way of life that feels increasingly rare today. It is truly a place for dreamers and history lovers.

Dobarsko Church sits in the quiet village of Dobarsko, near Bansko and not far from the Bulgarian-Greek border, surrounded by mountain scenery. It sits about 150 km from Sofia and 20 km from Bansko. From the ski resorts or the seaside, you can reach Dobarsko in around 2–3 hours.

Dobarsko became famous not only for its stunning nature, the vocal folklore group “Dobarsko Grannies,” and its delicious homemade meals. Long before rural tourism boomed in the 21st century, travelers discovered Dobarsko for one reason: its Dobarsko church with 400-year-old frescoes.

Inside the Dobarsko church, you can see two incredible frescoes of Jesus in what looks like a spaceship. Erich von Däniken mentioned them in his cult film Memories of the Future. It was back in the 1970 that Swiss researcher and ufologist Erich von Daniken mentioned Sts. Theodore Tiron and Theodore Stratelates in his cult film Memories of the Future: Unsolved Mysteries of the Past.

It was the first time that the world heard of Jesus Christ painted in what looks like a spaceship surrounded by flames against the background of a clearly depicted stratosphere and outer space.

The mystery of Dobarsko Church

Many tourists including pilots and cosmonauts visit Dobarsko to see these stunning frescoes. Present-day science has no explanation for them. You can find such space elements, though not so explicit, in other ancient frescoes. In the theological interpretation this is symbolism that conveys God’s glory. Ufologists have other hypotheses to offer that have to do with extraterrestrial intelligence and UFOs.

The story of the church’s restoration carries another legend that sparks curiosity. The church dates back to 1614. It has a three-nave structure, just like other Byzantine-style Orthodox churches. But in 1978, during the restoration work, something curious happened.

After they cleaned them up they were dismayed with the vibrant depiction of biblical scenes and the animated faces of saints, so vivid and perfect that they remind of the masterpieces of Renaissance artist Giotto. Instead of pale-faced martyrs as the canons of Christian painting require, the church’s walls are inhabited by good-looking youthful figures fraught with light and joy.

The Dobarsko Church small, its area being about 160 sq. m, but it has 460 human figures

Such densely frescoed church is found nowhere else in Bulgaria. Here not even one centimeter has been left unpainted. The church has frescoes of more than thirty women-saints. No church has so many female figures. Male figures are even more numerous.

There are unique frescoes of warrior saints St. Demetrius and St. George – painted full-length. In the Orthodox tradition they usually ride horses. Equally unique is the iconostasis with the Royal Doors and with the twelve apostles painted full-length too.

The central dome features various scenes from the life of the Savior. One celebrated fresco is The Transfiguration in which He is ready for takeoff in a spacecraft.

The southern section of the Dobarsko Church, straight before visitors’ stunned eyes, presents scenes from removing the body of Christ from the cross, His funeral and mourning and the emblematic mural Descent into Hell. In it the Savior descends into hell inside something like a fiery rocket – to reopen heaven’s gates for humans.

The church has yet another mystery, and it has to do with the healing waters of the spring in the churchyard. Visitors often queue there carrying bottles and tubes. The spring’s debit neither grows nor decreases and it never freezes, even on coldest of days . Its water is quite helpful in the treatment of eye diseases.
