For most Bulgarians, Varna is synonymous with summer, sea breeze, freedom and carefree days. We all love this city — and no wonder! We’ve strolled through the Sea Garden and along the breakwater, eaten fried sprats at the seaside taverns, sipped cocktails on the beach, explored the city museums, art galleries and charming boutique shops. And of course, we know the nearby resorts of Golden Sands, St. Constantine and Helena, and others well.

We’ve visited Balchik, Cape Kaliakra, and so on. Let’s say we’ve already discovered the natural wonder of the Stone Forest (Pobiti Kamani) — the only desert of its kind in Europe — and the remarkable Aladzha Monastery, the best-preserved rock monastery in Bulgaria. We’ve ticked off most of the well-known sights in the area, but we want more and more new experiences, new encounters with nature and with history.

Because nearVarna there are still corners little explored by the average tourist — places that will fill your eyes with beauty and your soul with peace, and awaken the desire to seek new horizons, both within and beyond yourself.

1. The Museum of the Russian Old Believers in the village of Kazashko – 9 km from Varna

Kazashko is practically a neighbourhood of Varna — you can reach it in about 15 minutes from the city centre. It sits on the shore of Lake Varna, far from the noise and chaos of Bulgaria’s seaside capital. In the heart of the village, right across from the mayor’s office, you’ll find a small, tidy building with a beautifully painted fishing boat proudly displayed in front of it.

This is the Cossack Cultural Centre, home to a unique museum collection assembled from donations by local residents. Here visitors can learn about the history and way of life of Kazashko and the Old Believer Cossacks who settled on the shores of Lake Varna more than a century ago.

The recently renovated building also houses the Sunday school of Kazashko village with the “Kazacheta” (Little Cossacks) club, where children learn Russian and study traditional Cossack songs, dances and everything connected to the culture of their ancestors. The centre was founded on the initiative of the dedicated Mayor Gergana Petkova — the only female ataman (Cossack leader) in Bulgaria.

Who are the Cossacks of Kazashko?

Old Believer Cossacks founded the fishing settlement in the 17th century. They fled forced church reforms and Peter the Great’s attempts to modernize Russia.  These long-bearded Cossacks and their families scattered across the world. A sizeable group settled in the Danube Delta in Romania. From there, several Old Believer families made their way to the shores of Lake Varna, where in 1905 they founded the village of Kazashko. On this tranquil lakeside shore, the long-bearded Cossacks found their happiness and destiny — along with a guarantee from the authorities that they could freely practise their ancient Orthodox faith.

They are also known as Lipovans or Old Believers. Today their descendants form the smallest ethnic community in Bulgaria, and proudly call themselves Cossacks — they have never lost their connection to their Cossack roots in distant Russia.

If you’d like to visit the museum, contact the mayor’s office to have it unlocked for you. And don’t miss a walk along the village’s lakeside shore, which opens up beautiful views of the shimmering blue water — a favourite spot for photographers and painters, especially at sunset. I’ve seen truly stunning shots taken here.

2. The Tekke in the village of Obrochishte – 30 km from Varna

Few people think to stop at the village of Obrochishte while travelling in the area  near Varna on the way to Balchik or the Albena resort. The place is greatly underrated by the average holidaymaker, who has no idea that a genuine cultural and historical treasure lies here — one that transcends both time and religious boundaries, offering visitors a sense of peace, and for some, even hope for healing.

The architectural monument stands right by the road, marked with a large sign, so you can’t miss it. It sits within a reasonably well-maintained park with information boards containing detailed historical facts. This is a sacred religious site venerated through the centuries by both Muslims and Christians alike. It was once a place of prayer for the Muslim spiritual leader Ak Yazılı Baba, as well as for his Christian counterpart, St. Athanasius. Depending on their faith, people called it either “the tekke” (a Sufi lodge) or “the monastery.”

It is believed to have been founded in the 16th century as a dervish retreat. Everyone who comes here feels a strong surge of positive energy. The complex consists of two buildings — a türbe (mausoleum) and an imaret (a soup kitchen/community hall). Remarkably, both buildings are in the shape of a perfect heptagon (seven-sided polygon). The tomb of the saint Ak Yazılı Baba is located here, where devout Muslims leave their offerings and say their prayers.

According to Christians, there was once an old monastery on this site

which at a later stage was converted by Muslims into a dervish lodge. Legends surrounding the Tekke of Obrochishte tell of Saint Athanasius, who was killed by the Ottomans for his unwavering faith. Another tale speaks of the impossible love between a young shepherd named Atanas and a beautiful Turkish girl, ending in the tragic suicide of the mixed-faith couple.

The place was deserted on our early spring visit. No one unlocked the buildings for us. We later learned a guide usually shows guests around and gives an interesting talk. The entrance fee remains 5 BGN (approx. €2.50) as of 2026. You should check in advance whether a guide will be available. If you want to photograph the site or take a selfie, there is an additional fee of 10 BGN.

3. The Chapel above the village of Padina and its surreal lake – 35 km from Varna

This is one of the most famous and most photographed chapels not only near Varna, but in all of Bulgaria. You’ve probably seen it in photos online. Everyone comes here to capture its solitary, wind-battered silhouette perched on top of a hill — visible from the entire plain that stretches out at its feet. The name of the village of Padina (meaning “hollow” or “low-lying place”) comes precisely from the fact that its houses are scattered low down in the dip of the valley.

Unfortunately I couldn’t find any information about the chapel. It appears to have been built recently, but was locked. We peeked through the windows and saw that the walls inside are covered with people’s names. We arrived in a near-hurricane wind which, up on the hill, almost swept us off our feet.

As a backdrop to the ethereal chapel, a strikingly beautiful lake spreads out below, shimmering in shades of emerald and turquoise. The colour is so unnatural that it looks like it’s been over-processed in Photoshop by an amateur photographer. This artificial basin collects toxic wastewater from the Devnya industrial plants. It also serves Solvay Devnya, one of Bulgaria’s largest chemical factories.

If you look closely, you’ll notice smoke drifting above the lake. The white fumes result from a toxic, most likely lethal, chemical reaction. Fortunately the wind was blowing in the opposite direction, otherwise the vapours might have reached us. None of this, however, detracts in any way from the otherworldly beauty of the place. On the contrary — it adds an extra surrealist touch!

4. A mosque beside a fairytale castle in the village of Drăndar, on the way to Nikolaevka Reservoir – 35 km from Varna

If you wander aimlessly in the area near the Varna, you may stumble upon another surreal scene worthy of a Disney animated film. I’m talking about the village of Drăndar in Suvorovo municipality and its beautiful mosque . Its minarets shoot up into the sky right next to the cone-shaped blue rooftops of a fantastical castle. These two extraordinary structures stand out dramatically against the backdrop of poor village houses with sagging roofs and chickens wandering along the dusty road.

Drăndar is the home village of Ahmed Dogan, the founder of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) — Bulgaria’s largest ethnic Turkish political party. It was here, in 1989, that he established the party. He later built the striking castle, which to this day stands empty. Everything about it suggests that no human foot has set foot here in years. The castle seems to have sunk into an eternal sleep, much like its counterpart in the fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty. The building, which looks as though it’s been constructed from polystyrene, has stood untouched amid an overgrown courtyard for years. And remarkably, no one has ever thought to jump the fence to explore it — or to vandalise and loot it. For entirely understandable reasons.

Drăndar has no more than 150 permanent residents, all of them ethnic Turks. The village name translates as “wool carder” in Turkish. The large mosque was built in 1870, but was destroyed by a landslide and remained closed for 50 years, only being restored in 2002.

A few kilometres from Drăndar lies another hidden gem —

Nikolaevka Reservoir

This is one of the largest reservoirs in the Varna region. It is named after the neighbouring village of Nikolaevka, which is the birthplace of Petar Danov (also known as Beinsa Douno) — the founder of a spiritual movement called Universalthe White Brotherhood, which still has followers in Bulgaria and beyond. The village’s old name was Hadărcha.

The place is a photographer’s paradise. It is also a favorite spot for anglers. The waters hold carp, catfish, and even crayfish. Nikolaevka remains very well maintained. The banks are clean and free of the usual rubbish found in other water bodies. They are unspoiled and peaceful, with good facilities for picnicking and sunbathing. These are, of course, my personal impressions from a visit in May — and we left very satisfied.

5. The Karst Springs near Devnya – the largest in Bulgaria – 31 km from Varna

I had long wanted to visit this place! The Magical Spring flows freely today. It is part of a group of 30 karst springs. Together, they produce 3,200 liters of water per second. These springs are a natural wonder. However, nearby factories and the cities of Devnya and Varna capture most of the water.

Only the Magical Spring flows freely, in a beautiful natural setting. Commercial use has even drawn this spring into its grounds—for unknown reasons, it now sits within a private tourist complex. The owner kindly let us visit the spring without requiring a restaurant purchase. He even pointed out exactly where the water bubbles up. A lovely ornamental pool has been created around it. According to legend, this spot was a favourite walking place of Marciana — the sister of the Roman Emperor Trajan. In the 1st century AD, Trajan conquered the nearby Thracian settlement and named it after her: Marcianopolis. Today, the city of Devnya stands on the site of that ancient Roman town.

6. The Museum of Mosaics and the Treasure of Marcianopolis – 33 km from Varna

Devnya is a major industrial centre, so few people imagine that the town could have anything to offer tourists. But in fact it has a great deal for lovers of antiquity. The ancient Marcianopolis was one of the largest cities founded during the Roman period in this part of the Balkans.

Beautiful public buildings once rose here: a basilica, a library, baths, and a triumphal arch. Exquisite mosaics decorated the floors of private homes. Bulgaria’s only Museum of Mosaics displays some of these pieces on the site of an ancient villa. Experts rank them among the finest examples of Roman mosaic art. Artists created these works in sixteen colors using ceramics, clay, glass paste, marble, and limestone.

The museum also displays a golden treasure discovered in late 2019 during excavations near the museum building — 19 Roman gold coins minted around 1,600 years ago. The museum is included in Bulgaria’s list of 100 National Tourist Sites and offers an unforgettable journey into antiquity.

7. The Salt Pit near Provadia – 48 km from Varna

A massive stone fortress rose near present-day Varna thousands of years before Egypt’s first pyramid. Salt production fueled the growth of the Old World’s oldest known city. This discovery rewrote European prehistory.This happened nearly 7,000 years ago, and the place is today’s town of Provadia. Archaeological excavations are ongoing here, and the site’s director, Prof. Vasil Nikolov, sometimes personally shows visitors around and shares fascinating details about the lives of our distant ancestors.

The archaeological site lies within the grounds of the private company Solvay Sodi Devnya near Provadia, but tourists are permitted to enter and explore it. To do so, simply speak to the security staff at the main entrance. A separate visitor route with direct access to the site is currently being considered.

Time in the village seems to have slowed down. As you stroll through the streets, you suddenly travel back in time. Neither the crowds of tourists nor local business ambitions can change its soul. Kovachevitsa is a tale frozen in time—a story you will never get tired of.

When to visit Kovachevitsa in peace

To feel the magic of Kovachevitsa without the crowds, follow my advice:

• Weekdays: Visit from Tuesday to Thursday. The silence is tangible and prices are lower.
• Late Autumn: Mist covers the stone roofs. Kovachevitsa reveals its melancholic beauty.
• Winter: I love Kovachevitsa in winter. Enjoy the snow and a glass of wine by the fire.

As you step onto the steep, cobblestone streets of Kovachevitsa, you will immediately feel how the intrusive city noise gives way to a profound, mountainous silence. Most of the centuries-old houses have been meticulously restored with immense love and respect for the past, preserved within an architectural reserve that remains refreshingly free from modern concrete and kitsch. Today, the village has transformed into a prestigious artistic hub, where intellectuals, public figures, and film directors find inspiration amidst the timeless atmosphere of the Rhodope mountains.

Where to Stay and What to Eat

Weekend accommodation in Kovachevitsa is plentiful – you can rent a villa, put up at a guest house or at one of the family hotels. On the outside they are exactly the same as any other house here. But they offer all modern conveniences – wi-fi, satellite TV etc., though the furnishing is entirely in the original ancient style. Kovachevitsa is also famed for its traditional Rhodope-style cooking.

Hominy, pot beans, homemade sausages attract the tourists who come here from all corners of the world to the local taverns. While the surrounding countryside offers an abundance of natural and historical landmarks. Not to mention the beautiful landscapes and the mountain pathways that can take you to places untouched by human hands.

The Village Museum

Located in the former school built in 1892, the museum displays the life of the past. You can see an original classroom with inkwells and old maps, as well as a weaving room with a 200-year-old loom. The museum also keeps a collection of old weapons related to the revolutionary movement.

Kovachevitsa: A Haven for Artists and Dreamers

The fairytale village of Kovachevitsa is a popular destination for more than just tourists. Today, many Bulgarian directors and public figures own houses here. Most of these buildings are 100 to 200 years old. Having a house in Kovachevitsa is now a matter of prestige. To experience all the wonders of this romantic village, I recommend staying for at least one night.

Nevertheless, Kovachevitsa is not a snobbish place or at least not to the people who come here time and again, enchanted by its atmosphere, untouched by the passage of time. Even though some of the houses are now hotels, private villas, taverns or art galleries, it has lost nothing of its original style.

The Secrets of the 15th-Century Builders

History suggests that Kovachevitsa dates back to the 15th century. Legend says Christian settlers from Albania founded the village. Later, it grew into a prosperous center. However, the current look of Kovachevitsa comes from the 18th century.

That was a time when the local men were famed as talented builders. In the houses they built they would apply some of the novelties in European architecture and construction they had learnt. The sophisticated sewerage system was a veritable miracle.

These local builders were true visionaries. They didn’t just work abroad; they brought their world-class skills back home to Kovachevitsa. This is why the village infrastructure is so unique. In fact, they started building the drainage system as soon as the very first house was finished.

Because of this, every home in Kovachevitsa had an indoor toilet. Each house featured three essential elements: a private bathroom, a sink, and a traditional bread oven. Even today, this 500-year-old system works perfectly without a single hitch. It is a true miracle of ancient engineering in the heart of Kovachevitsa.

The houses here are impressively solid. Unlike most buildings from the Bulgarian National Revival, these structures rise several stories high. They are perched closely together, almost hugging, to make the most of the limited mountain terrain.

Most of the wooden balconies (verandahs) open up to breathtaking views of the Rhodope Mountains. Up here, the air is crystal-clear. At night, the sky feels so close that you could almost reach out and touch the stars. It is pure magic.

How to get to Kovachevitsa from Sofia

By Car: The drive from Sofia takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes. Use the A3 highway to Blagoevgrad, then continue to Gotse Delchev. From there, follow the signs to Garmen and then head up to Kovachevitsa. The road is winding but beautiful.

By Public Transport: Take a bus from Sofia Central Bus Station to Gotse Delchev. Once there, look for a local minibus to Garmen. For the final 7 km to Kovachevitsa, it is easiest to take a local taxi, as bus schedules are limited.

Petrich lies nestled at the foot of some of Bulgaria’s most beautiful and untouched mountains – Ograzhden and Belasitsa. This southwestern region has been inhabited since ancient times, as evidenced by numerous archaeological findings. During the Middle Ages, it played a crucial role in shaping the fate of the First Bulgarian Empire.

How to get to Petrich and where to stay

Getting to Petrich is very easy by car or train. Moreover, the town serves as an ideal base for your trip. You will find many great places to stay here. Also, staying in the center allows you to see everything at a relaxed pace. Specifically, you can enjoy local food and hospitality every day.

Ograzhden Mountain and Samuil’s Fortress

Just 15 km from Petrich, near the border with North Macedonia, stands the historic Samuil’s Fortress. Actually, the site was built between 1009 and 1013 during the reign of Tsar Samuil. Specifically, this place is tied to one of the most tragic moments in Bulgarian history. In 1014, during the Battle of Kleidion, Tsar Samuil’s army suffered a devastating defeat. Later the Byzantine Emperor Basil II captured and blinded 15,000 Bulgarian soldiers. The sight of his blinded troops caused Tsar Samuil to collapse and die of a heart attack.

Today, Samuil’s Fortress is a restored national park-museum. Initially, visitors pass through a picturesque park where they can explore replicas of medieval dugouts, once used as shelters for Tsar Samuil’s army. Furthermore, the site features a towering 5-meter bronze statue of Tsar Samuil, depicted holding a scepter—a symbol of Bulgaria’s enduring spirit. A reconstructed watchtower offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.

Heraclea Sintica: The Hidden Ancient City

Not far from Petrich, near the Rupite area, lie the impressive ruins of Heraclea Sintica, an ancient city founded in the 4th century BCE. It flourished as a major cultural and trade center during Macedonian and Roman rule. Archaeological evidence shows the city was buried by two catastrophic earthquakes.

One of the most significant findings is an inscription that proves the city’s identity. This discovery holds great cultural and historical value, as researchers mistakenly searched for Heraclea Sintica in neighboring Greece for over 150 years.

Rupite: A Spiritual Haven

Initially, the Rupite area offers a unique spiritual retreat. It lies at the base of the extinct Kozhuh volcano. Furthermore, the legendary prophetess Vanga lived and worked here. In 1994, she funded the nearby St. Petka church. Today, this serene area features a beautiful park with rare trees. Visitors also enjoy the natural mineral springs and streams. The peaceful atmosphere gives the place a unique energy. Therefore, it continues to attract many people from all over the world.

Churilov Monastery “St. George”

Located near the village of Gega, the Churilov Monastery St. George is another spiritual gem in the Petrich region. Believed to have been founded in the 14th century, the monastery is known for its rich history and distinctive frescoes. Surrounded by the untouched natural beauty of Bulgaria’s southwest, it remains a tranquil place of worship and reflection.

If you don’t like old places, if abandoned areas and decaying houses overtaken by ivy and forgotten history repel you, if you have no interest in history and find conversations with the few elderly villagers of our mountain settlements boring and tedious—quickly exit this article. The village of Pirin will hardly touch your heart!

But if you are the type who feels a special emotion when you find yourself in such corners, evoking melancholy with the eerie beauty of crumbling, memory-laden houses, tightly nestled along ghostly alleys, Pirin is your destination!

Where Pirin Village is located

It lies in the Pirin Mountains, 200 km from Sofia and 30 km from Gotse Delchev. You’ll reach it faster if you choose the Struma Highway through Blagoevgrad. After Katuntsi, the road becomes quite picturesque as it climbs the mountain. To reach Pirin, take a 2-kilometer detour from the main road to Gotse Delchev. The village is tucked in a basin, with houses stacked on the slopes of the Pirin Mountains on both sides of the Pirinska Bistritsa River.

7 Reasons to Visit Pirin Village

1. Step into a different time dimension

The village seems frozen in the 1950s, with typical old stone and adobe houses, slanted roofs, and wooden gates. You won’t find cafes, supermarkets, stalls, billboards, or other “hooks” of globalization here. Pirin village has literally encapsulated itself in the past. No wonder it’s sought after as a set for film productions.

At least three Bulgarian films have been shot here. Not to mention that it’s one of the most photogenic villages in Bulgaria—no matter where you look, you’re amazed! A real magnet for photographers, melancholic souls, and lovers of antiquities and Dark Tourism (to which I belong).

A bit of history

Pirin’s past is glorious and twisted. In the Middle Ages, the locals made a living by mining iron ore. The villagers operated five forges and eleven furnaces, producing large quantities of nails, horseshoes, and farming tools, which were quickly sent to the markets near the Aegean Sea.

People from Pirin have always been proud and rebellious. They couldn’t stand the Turkish boots trampling on their fields and homeland. So, just before the Ilinden-Preobrazhenie Uprising in 1903, the people here rose up against the invader, but the uprising was crushed in blood.

2. Light a candle in the old “St. Nicholas” church

Some of the villagers, however, hid in the “St. Nicholas” church from 1885, locking themselves behind its large wooden door. When the Turks saw the door tightly barred and the image of Saint Nicholas painted above it, they, being superstitious, abandoned their plans to kill the locals.

Today, the church is listed as a cultural monument. It’s said that in its apse rests the decapitated head of Spiro Voivoda, as well as the bones of other rebels from the village who died during the Ilinden-Preobrazhenie Uprising. The church stands on a small hill above the village houses. The key to it is held by the churchwarden, old Vela, and the mayor of Pirin village. It’s worth a visit.

3. Ask about the dragon Gintcho and maiden Kalina

The way locals tell the dragon’s legend is strange, as though it really happened to their relatives. The plot is long and tangled, like a human fate. Essentially, it’s about this: while walking by the river on a rainy day, the maiden Kalina (or Stana) was kidnapped by a dragon. He took her to his cave near Pirin village. After a while, Kalina gave birth to a male child—half human, half dragon, named Gintcho—and returned to the village with the child. The dragon built them a beautiful house, hauling massive rocks for its foundations and occasionally visiting his family.

Years passed, but Gintcho, who had wings, couldn’t adjust to human life, and when he grew up, he flew to the mountain forever. To this day, the villagers of Pirin believe that the dragon Gintcho protects their fields from hail. Gintcho’s house, which is different from the rest, has long been abandoned. But the older people still remember its last inhabitant. This was a real person, who died in the 20th century with the surname Gintchov. According to locals, he was a descendant of the dragon and had signs of… wings.

Others tell the story of Nikolinka, who passed away in the 1960s. When she learned that the dragon liked her, the beautiful maiden smeared her face with poisonous herbs, causing her skin to burn and become ugly, so that he wouldn’t steal her. The dragon gave up his intentions, but the woman remained ugly and alone for the rest of her days.

The story of  the 6 pregnant women

Pirin village arose on the opposite hill in the early Middle Ages. But, as usual, the Turks chased its people. Some of them settled in the Pirinska Bistritsa River basin and founded what is now Pirin village. But a small group headed north.

And as the people wandered across Bulgaria, a miracle occurred—overnight, three women gave birth to six male children under one… hornbeam. The group decided to settle there! As a result, the town of Gabrovo was born.

4. A village square like a picture!

To immortalize the dragon legend, the mayor commissioned a wooden sculpture from his own pocket of a standing dragon with a maiden kneeling at its feet, kissing its hand for some unknown reason, but as if doing… something else.

Alongside the unusual sculpture, the village entered the media, attracting tourists. For them, an information board in both Bulgarian and English was placed, telling the legend far and wide. Three more wooden sculptures have appeared in the square: one of Spiro Voivoda, whose decapitated head is buried in the church, one of Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of the village, and the newest attraction—a mother bear with her cub, as well as a brand-new small artificial waterfall, quietly trickling.

5. Pirin Village has a guesthouse

The good news is that Pirin village is light years away from modernity. But that doesn’t mean it’s at odds with tourism. For years, enthusiasts of old Bulgarian villages and authentic experiences have stayed in the guesthouse of former folk singer Lyubimka Biserova. Her grandfather, Pop Stamat, was an ally of Yane Sandanski and Spiro Voivoda.

The hostess greets guests with homemade dishes and introduces them to unique Pirin traditions and rituals. Under her guidance, visitors can learn how to make the so-called lozhena banitsa, summer sherbet soup, and other local delicacies. Nearby, there are several hiking routes. 6. Take a walk to the “Holy Trinity” monastery

About 3 km from Pirin village lies the “Holy Trinity” monastery, the location of the old Pirin village. Locals call it “Turitsa” and claim that even today, the area is scattered with ruins of the former village. Recently, the so-called monastery was renovated.

The road to it has also been repaired and is fairly good. The narrow asphalt strip, which sometimes disappears, winds upwards in the mountains, offering beautiful views of Iren-Pirin. Of course, you can also reach it on foot.

Actually, it is a small chapel, perched on a hill in a beautiful area. However, there was never a monastery here, and I couldn’t understand why it is called that. Every year on Pentecost, the village of Pirin celebrates its holiday with a large gathering near “Holy Trinity,” where the women prepare a feast in more than 10 huge pots.

7. The locals, living between two worlds

In the mid-20th century, Pirin was one of the largest villages in the area, with over 2,000 inhabitants. Today, it has no more than 80 permanent residents, mostly elderly people, whose way of life is not much different from that of their ancestors. Since tourists come here quite rarely, every newcomer is met with curiosity and goodwill. People from Pirin are friendly and approachable. Conversations with them are easy and pleasant.

This is how we learned about the dragon Gintcho, the six mothers under the linden tree, and, of course, the glorious history of the village of Pirin. Everywhere you go, people stop and talk to you, happy that someone shows interest in them. If you want to visit the church, look for the mayor or grandmother Vela, the churchwarden. They will unlock it for you and gladly tell you all about it.

As the Yantra approaches its confluence with the Danube, it carves breathtaking meanders and creates a dramatic canyon, etched with caves and inaccessible crevices, like a skilled sculptor shaping nature’s wonders. Near the villages of Novgrad, Belyanovo, and Djulyunitsa, the river flows slowly at the base of towering cliffs, making the area a magnet for nature enthusiasts, photographers, and water sports lovers.

Kayaking in Bulgaria – through the Yantra River Canyon

Kayaking enthusiasts are well-acquainted with this region. The river routes vary in length, with the shortest starting from a campsite near Belyanovo. Even beginners like me, who can’t swim, can enjoy the adventure. After a brief safety briefing and donning a life jacket, you’re ready to hop into the kayak.

The route spans approximately 8 km, with its final stretch entering the slightly more turbulent waters of the Danube and ending at the fishing village of Krivina. It took us about 2.5 hours to complete. The most popular route, however, is a two-day journey starting at the iconic Kolyo Ficheto Bridge in Byala, with an overnight stop in Belyanovo. This information came from Sasho Popov, our guide and the head of the “Prista” Tourism Society, which regularly organizes kayaking adventures in the area.

Kayaking allows you to become one with the water and feel at harmony with nature. Trees and shrubs surround the river, forming a lush, green tunnel that wraps you in tranquility and shuts out the outside world. As the kayak glides smoothly forward, you’ll see grey herons, cormorants, mallards, storks, and even sea eagles soaring above. It’s a magical experience!

When Is the Kayaking Season?

The cold months are no obstacle for kayaking in Bulgaria. Enthusiasts from the “Prista” Tourist Society wrap up the season as late as Christmas and then eagerly reopen it by mid-January. During late autumn and winter, you can see large flocks of birds, including pelicans, while shreds of mist float low over the water, creating a beautiful atmosphere, explains the society’s chairman, Sasho Popov. Thus, every season is suitable for this sport, each with its own charm, as long as the water isn’t frozen in winter. However, freezing has been a rare occurrence in recent years.

Hesychasts, Monastic Cells, and Churches High in the Rocks

Exploring these cliffs is one of the highlights of kayaking in Bulgaria, offering a mix of adventure and history. Near the village of Belyanovo, just before the Yantra River flows into the Danube, it carves its way at the base of a 40–50-meter-high vertical rock wall.

“These limestone cliffs have been eroded by water, forming a fascinating structure with caves and niches,” Sasho explains as our kayak slices quietly through the water. “In some of these, medieval hermit monks carved out rock cells. See them up there, high on the cliffs? They’re hard to access and require alpine equipment to reach. Perhaps the monks used rope ladders or climbed the cliffs with their bare hands?

The Rock Church of Belyanovo

One of the rock churches in the area has been made accessible for visitors. It’s located just before the village of Belyanovo and features a parking area and a convenient pathway. Dating back to the 12th century, this church was likely part of a small monastic complex. From here, you can enjoy stunning views of the shrub-covered banks of the Yantra River.

“In the past, hermits enjoyed the support of local authorities and the population,” Sasho tells us. “Part of the taxes collected went toward maintaining these rock monasteries and their inhabitants.”

Locals refer to the church as “Pop Martin’s Church,” named after a legendary priest whose story is deeply rooted in folklore. According to legend, Pop Martin became a rebel leader after the local pasha abducted his beautiful wife. He joined a band of freedom fighters and hid his stolen gold in the cliffs near the village.

Belyanovo’s Suspension Bridge

The locals take pride in their suspension bridge, which connects the two banks of the Yantra River. Built in 1968, the bridge spans 105 meters and was the longest suspension bridge in Bulgaria until 1975. While it may no longer hold the record, it offers unparalleled views of the Yantra.

Accessible only to pedestrians, the bridge connects Belyanovo with the nearby village of Novgrad, about 8 km away.

For those traveling by car, the nearby iron bridge, constructed by a Belgian company in 1909, is an alternative route. So Kayakers have the unique opportunity to pass under this historic structure during their journey.

Lenin’s Statue and the Charm of Novgrad

On the village square, you’ll find a statue of Vladimir Lenin—the only surviving monument of its kind in Bulgaria.

Built in 1975 with donations from the locals, the statue was recently spared from being sold to a Scandinavian collector for $30,000. Where else in the EU can you encounter such a relic of Soviet-era history?

Natural Wonder: Markov Cross

In the outskirts of Djulyunitsa, you’ll come across another hidden gem—the “Markov Cross” natural site. This area features a small parking lot, informational signage, benches, and railings. There is also a new chapel dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God.

From here, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the meandering Yantra below.

On one of the inaccessible cliffs high above the river, a cross carved into the rock stands out visibly.
A legend surrounds this phenomenon, linked to a historical figure who lived in the 16th century. Deli Marko was renowned for his bravery and strength. According to stories, during an uneven battle with the Turks, in which he rescued abducted maidens, he swung his sword powerfully. The strike split the rock, leaving behind a cross-shaped mark.

Mechka Village – Wine and History

The village houses of Mechka scatter across the hilly banks of the Danube—a favorite spot for riverside walks, fishing, and photography. The local landmark is the Church of Sts. Peter and Paul, built in 1925, considered one of the most beautiful in the area. In the “Stalpishte” locality, literally a few meters from the Danube, lies an intriguing natural site known as “Dikilitas” or “The Erected Stone.”

People believe that these two tall stone formations date back to the Mesozoic era (i.e., several hundred million years ago). Nearby, they have established a modest campsite with wooden bungalows.I n the vicinity , there is also a pleasant hotel complex. It has a restaurant offering a magical view of the Danube. The owners have vineyards. So they produce excellent wine, which we had the chance to taste in the specially designed winery within the complex. So visitors can combine scenic walks, wine tasting, and kayaking in Bulgaria for a full-day experience along the Danube’s tributaries.

In Conclusion

You can still stumble upon unspoiled paradises untouched by mass tourism, like Belyanovo and the Yantra River canyon.  This shows that Bulgaria holds an inexhaustible treasure trove of historical and natural assets. You have also modern hotels and guesthouses, delicious food and  kindness of the locals. No matter how far and wide we explore, we always find a new, hidden place that captivates us. It fills us with awe and makes us exclaim: “There is no better country than ours!”

How to Get to Dolen Village in the Rhodope Mountains

Traveling to Dolen village is a scenic experience. If you’re setting off from Sofia, follow the main road south toward Blagoevgrad, then take the route toward Gotse Delchev. As you wind into the Western Rhodope Mountains, you’ll find a turn north that leads directly to the village. The old part of Dolen sits above its modern section. Although the final stretch is steep and narrow, the panoramic views make every bend worth it.

Currently, a few guesthouses host travelers, but most of the time they sit quietly empty. Outside those walls, everything feels incredibly real. Modernity and human fuss stay at a distance here. While some owners have restored their houses as holiday homes, they rarely visit. Consequently, the village keeps its solitude, framed by the untamed beauty of the Rhodope slopes.

The Two Faces of Dolen: Ancient and Modern

Dolen is part of Satovcha Municipality in the Western Rhodopes. The drive there invites constant stops for photos of breathtaking panoramas. Furthermore, the new village sits lower on the mountain with modern comforts. However, most visitors head for the old village above, where stone cottages cling to the hillsides and narrow paths rise steeply between them.

The road twists toward the village square, where local elders sit outside their homes. Conversation comes easily here, and residents often talk about Dolen’s vibrant past. For instance, the school once overflowed with children. Today, only about 30 year-round residents remain, mostly retirees who watch visitors with gentle interest.

The Stone Houses of Dolen Village

This lost corner of the Western Rhodopes has miraculously preserved its appearance from over 200 years ago. Built entirely of stone and wood, these houses exude dignity. Not surprisingly, Bulgarian filmmakers have used Dolen village as a set for several famous movies.

The first thing that catches your eye are the stone-slate roofs. Laid like overlapping scales, they seem to cradle the house itself. Moreover, the chimneys are equally fascinating — some are round like cardinal hats, while others are square like regal crowns. Traditionally, the lower floor housed livestock to heat the upper rooms, where families slept on thick rugs.

Historical Secrets of Dolen village

The history of Dolen village is rich and ancient. About 60 years after Bulgaria fell under Ottoman rule, several Christian families sought refuge here. At its peak, the village counted more than 2,500 inhabitants. Furthermore, excavations have uncovered remains of Thracian necropolises and a Roman bridge nearby.

How the People of Dolen Built Their Church

The creation of the local church was born of ingenuity. To get permission from the Ottoman authorities, a local leader named Grandpa Kosta buried an icon of St. Nicholas in a meadow. He claimed to have seen it in a dream. When the icon was “discovered,” permission was granted. The St. Nicholas Church was completed in 1837, and its bells can be heard up to 8 km away.

Unique Singing Traditions and the Amphitheater

Local grandmothers are famed for their traditional high singing, a style recognized by UNESCO. Additionally, Dolen village features an impressive amphitheatre. It was built to host an ethno-fusion jazz festival that drew musicians from around the world. Today, it stands as a symbol of the village’s effort to support sustainable tourism.

Many travellers describe Dolen as a hidden treasure because it remains untouched by mass tourism. By preserving its original architecture and atmosphere, the village offers a way of life that feels increasingly rare today. It is truly a place for dreamers and history lovers.

This real natural treasure is hidden in a green vegetation area only 5 km from the Black Sea resort town of Balchik. The so-called Tuzla  consists of two lakes located in close proximity to each other, literally meters away from the seashore. Besides being beautiful, the place is healing. The water here is very salty, almost as salty as that of the Dead Sea – the saltiest body of water on the planet. This is probably due to the unique composition of the mud formed at the bottom of the lake. This mud has become legendary with its properties.

Its healing qualities were already known back in the 1930s when the so-called Balchik Tuzla baths, equipped with women’s and men’s cabins for access to the mud, existed. The “estuary miracle” helps in relieving arthrosis, tenosynovitis, neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s, but also skin diseases, radiculitis, plexitis, as well as conditions after a stroke, etc. The specialized rehabilitation hospital “Tuzlata”, built in the 1950s, overlooks the lakes.

This method of treatment and prevention, or the so-called Egyptian method, has been known since ancient times. The treatment takes place on the very shore of the estuary lake.  The staff from the nearby hospital draws the mud from there and fills the bath tubs with it . The Egyptian method is based entirely on the beneficial effects of the sun, mud, estuary and mineral water.

You need to sunbathe for about 30-40 minutes, so that the pores of the skin can be opened, then you smear yourself with a layer of healing mud, about half a centimeter thick. When the mud is taken out of the lake it is mushy with dark gray color. When applied to the body, the liquid evaporates and the mud dries turning ash-gray in color. After it dries, people need to go into the lake to wash it off. No detergents are used, as some of the components of the mud may interact with them and cause allergic reactions. That’s why it’s good to just wash with the salt water from the estuary lake and then with mineral water.

In order to have an effect, one procedure lasts a maximum of 2 to 3 hours. The hospital has a special corner at the lake itself, which is also accessible to tourists for a minimal fee. Here, they have all the necessary amenities:

There are two separate wards – for men and women, or as in the old days – Adam’s and Evin’s beach. It turns out that most people prefer to rub themselves clean naked. There are changing rooms, showers with mineral water, umbrellas, and a section covered with soft sand.  There you can lie down to sunbathe beforehand, or relax on the benches after a good smearing of mud. And most importantly, you have access to the baths, which are constantly replenished with fresh mud drawn from the middle of the lake.

Balchik Tuzla is part of the Natura 2000 ecological network

The whole area is a sanctuary for several bird species, including the White Egret. So while you are soaking and enjoying the panorama of the ponds, herons and all sorts of feathered creatures will fly over your heads. Of course you don’t necessarily have to take a mud bath to visit this paradise. Just stroll past the salt ponds and fill your eyes with beauty. There are several small restaurants nearby , as well as plenty of opportunities to stroll along the seashore.

Literally translated, the name of Svilengrad means “City of Silk”. In 1932, 25% of Bulgaria’s silk was produced here. This industry has long since died out in Svilengrad. But its development can be traced in the local history museum.

The medieval Neutzikon fortress

If you dream to get away from the noise and the stress and to take a walk in nature,  don’t miss the medieval Neutzikon fortress near the village of Mezek some 13 km from Svilengrad. It dates back to the 11th-12th century and the time of Byzantine emperor Alexius I Komnenos. However  the Thracian tribe of Odrysians also lived here. In front of the fortress tourists can take part in reenactments and historical games. But perhaps the…

Thracian domed tomb

…is even more interesting.  In fact the thomb is from the 4th-3rd century BC, and is also located near the village of Mezek. It has an almost 21-meter-long dromos /corridor/, followed by  two rectangular anterooms and a round funeral chamber with a beehive dome. Summing up the total length of the installation is about 31 meters. Tourists can see holograms of the artifacts found in the tomb.

The medieval fortress of Bukelon

The forteress is located in the outskirts of the village of Matochina (about 45 km from Svilengrad) . Therefore it played an important role in Bulgarian history. Here, on April 14, 1205, Bulgarian Tsar Kaloyan defeated the Latin army, led by Emperor Baldwin I. Our tsar captured  him and took him to the capital Tarnovgrad, where he was executed. The view from these hills in the direction of today’s Turkey and the city of Edirne is fantastic.

Ancient and mysterious Rock Churches near Svilengrad

In the villages of Matochina and Mihalich tourists can see two rock churches dating back to the 9th-10th century. Obviously the church near Mihalich is unique. It is cross-domed, carved deep into the rock,  by monks and used by followers of various heresies.

Definitely about 80% of the territory of the municipality is part of the European network of protected areas “Natura 2000”. In brief the hills of Sakar Mountain reveal their unique beauty and are home to an incredible variety of birds.

The old bridge of Svilengrad

And before you leave, do not forget to check  the old stone bridge of Svilengrad, connecting the two banks of the Maritsa River. It was built in 1529 as part of a complex, including a caravanserai (inn), a mosque, a bazaar and a hammam.

But what Haskovo is best known for is being the town of the Virgin Mary. 

The nearly 33-metre high figure of the Virgin Mary holding the Child in her arms was erected in 2003 on Yamacha Hill – one of the easternmost heights of the Eastern Rhodopes. Therefore the magnificent sculpture can be seen from any point of the city and is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s tallest monument of the Virgin and Child.

A bell tower stands tall next to it, offering a breathtaking view of the town and its vicinities. The bells are made in the Veleganov Bell Foundry – one of the oldest in Bulgaria. Twice a day Haskovo reverberates with its crystalline chime.

The unique monument to Envy

While strolling in the city center, visitors will see another “one of a kind” monument – the world’s only monument to Envy. The sculpture, which condemns this common sin, was erected entirely with donations. It represents a human figure spreading wings of feathers in an attempt to fly. However, two skeletal hands cling to it, preventing it from flying into the sky.

What  else to see in the town of Haskovo

You can also visit the Regional History Museum, which has 5 very interesting expositions – from archaeology to recent history and ethnography . The Museum Paskaleva House is also very interesting. It’s  a unique model of Renaissance architecture, which illustrates the transition from rural to urban life of the wealthy inhabitants of the town. However, there are other beautiful Renaissance houses in Haskovo that form a small borough. And there also are some very interesting churches.

A must is the local Drama & Puppet Theater “Ivan Dimov” .The building of the theater is one of the emblematic architectural monuments of the town of Haskovo which date back to the 1930s.

What to see in the vivinity of  Haskovo ?

At the nearby village of Alexandrovo, archaeologists came across a unique find: a 4th-century BC tomb with amazing frescoes. Unfortunately, it was looted long time ago. There is a perfect copy of this tomb in the building of “Thracian art in the Eastern Rhodopes” museum centre, which preserves rich expositions related to the life and lifestyle of our ancient ancestors.

Getting to know the legacy of the Thracian civilization

There are rock niches, sharapans (paired circular hollows in the rock for making wine), altars, sacrificial shrines. In addition there are many other sacral rock sites, each with its own interesting history. Besides a gold treasure dating back to 4500-4000 BC discovered in the Sakar Mountains is exhibited in the Museum Centre. The ornaments are similar to the items from the Varna Necropolis. They are among the oldest gold artefacts in the world. In fact, the  most amazing thing about it is the incredible craftsmanship. The gold elements have holes which are so tiny that only a horsehair could pass through them. The technique used by our ancestors to hang these gold pieces on jewellery is still a mystery,

The Sveti Duh (Holy Spirit) Roman fortress

Scattered on a small hill near the resort village of Mineralni Bani are the remains of the Sveti Duh (Holy Spirit) Roman fortress. The fortress was built in the 2nd century on the site of a Roman-era structure. It  has been inhabited for nearly 1000 years. Today, in the centre of the former fortress, there is a modern chapel.

The Uzundzhovo Church of the Assumption

Near the village of Uzundzhovo you can see the Church of the Assumption – the largest rural Christian temple in Bulgaria and once the center of one of the largest trade fairs in the Ottoman Empire. The building used to be a mosque. But in 1906 it was converted into a church, after the Ottoman Empire ceded the building to Bulgaria. The altar and some of the typical Orthodox ornaments were built in the same year.

The central square has a unique architecture, which cannot be seen anywhere else in Bulgaria. It combines a rock garden, wooden bridges, fountains, gazebos, a hotеl and even a mini amphitheater. The small Bulgarian municipality draws inspiration from the European experience in the development of modern tourism. It has been advertised as the best euro funds investor. While you are still in the local village square,

you should visit the Folklore center.

Visitors can get acquainted with the local customs and traditions. The interactive center is interesting for children who can make embroideries and play riddles. It is open seven days a week. Guests learn details about the local customs. Currently, there are demonstreations of ancient wedding rituals. Embroidery, knitted lace and decoration, which revive the past and preserve the local traditions, are on display at the interactive center for authentic folklore.

The archeological park Topolnitsa is the most popular local tourist attraction. 

The restored Neolithic settlement is located in the beautiful locality “St. Petka” above the village and has gained a huge popularity among tourists over the past 5 years. For this purpose, five small dwellings, as well as fur processing workshops and workshops for the manufacture of stone tools and ceramic pots were recreated on the site of the Neolithic settlement. A small museum presenting the valuable local findings is also part of the archaeological park Topolnitsa.The archaeological park was named Topolnitsa, because remains of a Neolithic settlement dating back to 7,000 BC were discovered on the bank of the nearby Topolnitsa River. The houses resemble the dwellings that were built 6,000-7,000 years BC.  Visitors can spend a night in three of these dwellings . If you go inside the dwellings, you can immerse with the lives of our old ancestors, make a fire and spend a night in a Neolithic atmosphere. Tourists are satisfied and visit this place again.

The new chapel St. Petka was built very close to the Neolithic village,

on the top of a picturesque hill, which offers a breathtaking view to the village of Chavdar. There is a big amusement park near the Neolithic village. Lovers of high adrenaline can find a rope garden and climbing walls in the park. There is also an observation tower, which opens a nice view of the surrounding area.
If you fancy making a one-day trip to this picturesque place, you should end your day with a visit to the nearby waterfall “Kazanite”. They are five small waterfalls, located between three rocks, chained by large holes. Each one is larger than the previous, with the water cascading from one to the other. The area is located at the foot of Sredna Gora Mountain and is accessible only via a dirt road. That is why Jeep safaris are organized from Topolnitsa archaeological park to the waterfall.
